Tiruye Alemnew was a 20-year-old student from Shegila near the historic town of Lalibela, known for its centuries-old churches carved from rock, in Amhara region.
On 12 October, Tiruye’s body was found in Lalibela. Reports indicated that she had been raped and then killed by soldiers from the Ethiopian National Defense Forces.
Tiruye was buried on 16 October. Her family was warned by local officials and security forces not to speak out or seek accountability, or they would face repercussions.
