Daniel* was a young man living in Mopti region, central Mali.
On 2 June he was out with his friend on a motorbike, bringing some gasoline home. They were stopped by police officers because the trade in fuels is strictly controlled by the military government.
Daniel and his friend were afraid they would be detained unlawfully and refused to comply with the police officers’ commands. The police opened fire, and Daniel was killed on the spot.
The police made no official statement on the incident. Daniel’s parents continue struggling to comprehend and accept the loss of their son.
