Dr. Khaled Zuhair Nimah was a consultant paediatrician living in Baghdad. He was one of the first specialists in neonatal intensive care in Iraq and an instructor of paediatric life support at the Children’s Welfare Teaching Hospital, Baghdad.
On 7 February, Dr. Nimah was in his car at an intersection on Morocco Street, central Baghdad, when a car carrying three attackers began firing at his vehicle. Bullets penetrated Dr. Nimah’s back, and he subsequently died of his wounds after being transported to hospital.
The Ministry of Interior issued a public statement extending its deepest condolences to the family and colleagues of the deceased. The reason why Dr. Nimah was targeted remains unknown. At least 419 civilians are known to have been killed in armed violence in Iraq during 2024.
