Ramzi Abu Sahloul was a clothing merchant from the al-Mawasi area west of Khan Younis, in southern Gaza. He is described by those who knew him as a devoted family man, husband, father and brother. Since the outbreak of the war in October 2023, Ramzi and his extended family had hosted some 300 displaced people in their two inter-connected homes.
On 22 January, Ramzi and four other men were trying to reach the building where his brother and elderly mother, alongside some 50 other civilians, were apparently being held by Israel Defence Forces. As the five men slowly approached, carrying a large white flag and with their hands in the air, they were shot at. Ramzi was hit in the chest and died instantly.
Ramzi was 51. He leaves behind a wife and two sons.
